790,255. Paper-board &c. containing vinyl copolymers. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Aug. 31, 1955 [Sept. 2, 1954], No. 24989/55. Class 96. An aqueous slurry, e.g. of fibres of ground wood, wood wool, hemp, shredded paper, glass, nylon, asbestos, polyethylene terephthalate, or cellulose acetate filaments, and an insoluble copolymer of vinyl acetate with an ethylenically unsaturated acid, e.g. crotonic, acrylic, chloracrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, maleamic, or itaconamic acid or partial esteis, e.g. monobutyl maleate or monoethyl itaconate, e.g. as an emulsion with particles 0.25 to 4 microns in size, is supplied to a screen &c. and subjected to pressure or suction to remove water, and dried, e.g. to form wall-boards. In an example, a dried, i-inch board was pressed at 80‹ C. and 1000 lbs. per square inch. Emulsifying agents &c. used with the slurry may be polyvinyl alcohol, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, methyl- or hydroxyethyl-cellulose, soap, sodium lauryl sulphate, turkey red oil, dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, or nonionic wetting agents &c. The acidic copolymer may be partly neutralized with alkali before use, and acidified to below pH=6.5 to precipitate it on to the fibre. Specification 661,492 is referred to.
