789,867. Roller bearings. TORRINGTON CO. July 19,1956 [Dec. 30, 1955], No.22332/56. Class 12 (1). A method of assembling a needle roller thrust bearing comprising complementary slotted discs 12, 17 having peripheral flanges 13, 18 and inner collars 14, 19, respectively, consists in arranging a series of needle rollers 16 in the slots 15 of one disc, fitting the complementary disc over the other disc with their flanges 13, 18 in contact and their inner collars 14, 19 telescoping, compressing the discs until the rollers bring the slots into registration, and engaging the innermost collar 21 over the adjoining collar 20. The retainers 12, 17 are originally slightly dished and during the compression they may become slightly concave on the outside. On release of pressure, however, the retainers become parallel with each other. A press for assembling the bearing comprises a resilient cushion ring 29 carried by a fixed member 26 and a resilient cushion 35 carried by a vertically movable member 33. The retainers 12, 17 and rollers 16 are assembled between the resilient cushions 29, 35 and are pressed together when the upper press member 33 is lowered. A plunger 31 having a bevelled edge 32 forces the edge 21 of the collar 14 over the edge of the collar 19.
