Abstract

In order to prevent foaming during the evaporation of aqueous solutions of sugar, such as cane sugar or beet sugar, a small proportion of an ether or an ester of a polyalkylene glycol is added to the solution. The molecular weight of the polyethylene glycol, from which the ether or ester is derived, is not less than 200 and not more than 3000. The etherifying and esterifying radicals should contain 8 to 22 carbon atoms. The additive is preferably present in the proportion. The mono- or di-stearate of a polyethylene glycol of M.W. 300, 600 or 1000, or the mono-stearate of a polypropylene glycol of M.W. 1200 or 2000, may be used. The mono- or di-cetyl ethers of the above-mentioned polyethylene or polypropylene glycols may be used. An examples relates to the distillation of concentrated sugar-beet juice at low pressure (2.5 cms. Hg) using 10 pp.m. of the monostearate of a polyethylene glycol of M.W. 600 as antifoaming agent.
