Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXIII] An apparatus for use in scribing by making a fine incision on the surface of sheet material comprises a body carrying a plane faced backing member for the sheet the backing member being mounted for angular adjustment about an axis perpendicular to its plane face, an upwardly presented support on which a scribing member can be slidden in a direction perpendicular to the rotational axis of the backing member and adjustment means associated with an indicator to enable the backing member to be angularly set. As shown the body 10 is provided with an upwardly facing plane surface 40 having a network of shallow grooves on which a foot or pedestal of a scriber is supported and manually guided. A plate like member 12 having reinforcing ribs 13 is formed integrally with the body 10. The backing member 16 is releasably supported on a frame integral with a cylindrical housing 19 mounted in an opening in the plate 12 by means of a bearing ring and a retaining ring 21. Rotational adjustment of the housing 19 and associated frame is controlled by a spring loaded plunger 41 mounted in the plate 12 and projecting radially inwards to engage with one of a series of angularly spaced notches on the bearing ring. A scale 43 marked in degrees extends around the circumference of the housing, a datum mark and vernier scale being provided on the member 12. A fine adjustment comprises a worm which co-operates with a toothed quadrant mounted in an enlargement of the bearing opening and adapted to be secured to the bearing ring by a clamp 53, thereby enabling the ring either to be freed for rotation by hand or clamped to the quadrant when it is desired to effect fine adjustment. The backing member may be made of translucent material and illuminated by a light source in the housing or by providing a window in the member supporting the backing member and an external light source. In a modification the supporting surface for the scriber is mounted in guides on the body and is movable towards and away from the axis of rotation of the backing member.
