Apparatus for cutting sheet glass comprises a cutting tool 6 so mounted on a carriage 5 as to be movable towards or away from the glass on a table 1, the carriage being displaceable in a slideway 3 parallel to the edge B of the table, the slideway being displaceable parallel to the edge A of the table, the displacements being effected by a manipulating member 8 rotatable about the cutting tool. In the form shown, the slideway and carriage are guided by rollers 19, 20, 23, 24 and may be clamped to the table or slideway respectively by screws 21, 22, 25, 26. The carriage is shown in Fig. 2. The tool 6 is vertically movable. Its orientation is determined by key and slot connection with a member 27 rotatable by a handle 7 to positions, corresponding to longitudinal or transverse cuts, when it is secured by spring clips 30, 31, engaging the handle. A disc 12, rotatable about the tool 60 between limits determined by a screw, not shown, engaging an arcuate slot 13, carries a bearing 11 for a shaft 10 coupled to the manipulating member 8 through a flexible connection such as a spring 9 or a universal joint. The shaft 10 carries a cam 15 so that by rotating the manipulating member the cam can lift a disc attached to the tool 6. Other, removable discs 16 provide the operating pressure for the tool. Stops 17, 18 define a slightly over dead-centre position of the cam 15 where the tool is inoperative. In other embodiments the bearing for the shaft 10 is carried in a member pivoted directly on the tool 6 while the cam 15 bears down on the member 27. In another embodiment, the operating pressure is provided by a spring.
