Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for cooling air delivered under pressure and supplying it to a compartment 15 comprises a turbine 11 the inlet of which is connected to a compressed air supply passage 20, while its outlet is connected to the compartment 15, a compressor 12 driven by the turbine and arranged to draw air through a passage 22 from the compartment 15 and to deliver it to a point outside the compartment, a heat exchanger 16 arranged between the passages 20 and 22 to transfer heat from the compressed air to the air passing to the compressor 12 and a precooler 17 to transfer heat to the fuel supply to an engine. The compartment 15 may be an aircraft cabin which is to be air conditioned and pressurized by ain air supply from the final or an intermediate stage of the compressor 18 of a propulsion engine 19 of the combustion turbine type. This supply passes through a shut-off valve 21, the precooler 17, the lower section of the heat exchanger 16, the turbine 11, a water separator 13 and a non-return valve 14 to the cabin 15 from which it flows to atmosphere or to passages for de-icing or de-misting purposes by way of a pressure regulating valve 23, a valve 24, the upper section of the exchanger 16 and the compressor 12. The exchanger 16 (see Group XIII) has a matrix driven by a variable speed gear to enable the temperature of the cabin to be controlled. On starting, the valve 24 may be rotated through a right angle from the position shown so that the upper section of the exchanger 16 receives air from the atmosphere until the cabin temperature has been sufficiently reduced.
