Abstract

789,560. Spring forks for cycles NSU WERKE AKT.-GES. May 3, 1954, No. 3024/56. Divided out of 12807/54. Classes 136(1) and 136(3) In a front wheel suspension for faired two-wheeled vehicles the height of the front part of the fairing is reduced to the minimum given by the wheel diameter and motion of the spring suspension and one steering axis bearing is arranged below the top of the front wheel and the other steering axis bearing is arranged at the height of the front wheel axle or lower. As shown in Fig. 1, the front wheel suspension comprises a tube 4 of oval crosssection rigidly connected at 9 with the wheel hub and slidable against the action of a band spring 13 between guides 5, 6 fixed to a plate 7. The plate 7 is rotatable for steering about bearings 8, 8a. The deflection of the spring 13 is limited only by the sum of the distances between the upper guide 5 and the wheel rim and the lower guide 6 and the wheel rim. In another embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the wheel is flexibly mounted for steering on the end of a pair of swinging arms 25, 26 the other ends of which arms pivot about fixed axes 28, 29. Universal joints 30, 31 permit the spring controlled motion and also pivotal motion of the front wheel about the steering axis L. In a further embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the hub 98 is pivoted at points 99, 100 to two rods 101, 102 which are themselves pivotally interconnected by members 103, 104 each of which members is rotatable about a pivot 105, 106 respectively in such a manner that the axes of rotation of the two pivots 105, 106 extend in the'central plane of the vehicle.
