Abstract
789,532. Rotary heat-exchangers. MARSHALL, J. W. Jan. 28, 1955 [Feb. 4, 1954; Feb. 23, 1954; March 5, 1954; March 23, 1954; May 21, 1954; Aug. 6, 1954; Nov. 4, 1954], Nos. 3289/54, 5285/54, 6458/54, 8423/54, 15029/54 22915/54 and 31891/54. Class 64(3) [ALso in Group XXVI] A rotary heat exchanger or air preheater Fig. 2, comprises a two-part casing 10, 11 each portion of which is provided with its own inlet and outlet ports, see also Figs. 1, 13 and 13A (not shown). The wall 13 of the casing is frusto-conical whilst the wall 14 is flat or frusto-conical. The rotor has a frusto-conical face 16 and eight blades and is formed integral with or secured to the shaft 17. The arcuate edges of the blades fit around a hub 19 which is fixed to a shaft 20 and carries a disc 21 in contact with the surfaces 13, 16 and an annular groove 22. The blades are connected to a shroud 26 which fits within a recess formed in the wall 13. The disc 21 is provided with oscillating shutters which are slotted to permit passage of the blades 18, for constructional details of which the Specification should be referred to. In a modification, see Fig. 14 (not shown), the bevel drive 31, 32 of the above described unit is dispensed with the blades driving the disc through the shutters. In a second modification, Fig. 16, the blades 18 are supported by the shaft 17 and a bearing 44 which is carried by lugs 45 on said blades. In a final modification, Fig. 15. the casing 11 is provided with an axially directed outlet port 48 and thin shroud rings 46, 47 are provided to support the blades together with a shroud 49. Alternatively, a shroud 49 or rings 46, 47 may be provided on each side of the blades and a recess 50 for the passage of cooling fluid may be disposed behind the shroud or each shroud ring. Means may be provided for adjusting the gear connection between the disc and the blades in order to take up wear. see Fig. 17 (not shown). A hot fluid is circulated on one side of the disc and a cooler fluid may circulate on the other side so that the apparatus acts as a heat exchanger or air preheater. Snecification 462,054 [Group XXVI] is referred to in the sixth Provisional Specification.
