Abstract
788,498. Removing bark from logs. BRANDENTHALER, A. April 30, 1956 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 13227/56. Class 145. A machine for removing bark from slabs 5 or edgings comprises a chain conveyer 11, feed wheels 12 mounted on pivoted arms and driven at the same peripheral speed as the conveyer, barkremoving tools 13, 14 also mounted on pivoted arms and driven in the same direction as the feed wheels at a substantially greater speed and a V-shaped brush 15 for removing loose bark. The pair of adjacent tools 13 are each. carried by independent parallel linkages pivoted at 99 and 101 to swing in vertical planes as the tools act on the top of the slab and four tools 14 arranged in two pairs are independently carried by arms 141 pivoted on inclined axes 139 to swing in divergent planes as the tools act on the sides of the slab ; in their lowest position, the tools 14 lie below the conveyer so that, even when raised by a large slab, they can still engage the outer margins of the slab. The tools and the brush are pressed down on the slab by pneumatic cylinders 234 under the control of air valves, the downward movement being limited by stops 236, and the feed wheel press on the slab by gravity. A motor 161 drives the tools and feed wheels by means of chains and, for the tools 14, spur and bevel gears in a casing 151. The dogs 63 on the conveyer have their upper faces serrated to provide teeth 70 for penetrating the underside of slabs and notches 69 for supporting the V-shaped cut faces of edgings. Each tool 13 or 14 has a body 120 with skew slots 123 in which teeth 125 with concave cutting edges are pivoted on pins 127 fitted in slots in the groove walls and retained in the slots by such means as welding.
