Abstract
<PICT:0788459/III/1> <PICT:0788459/III/2> <PICT:0788459/III/3> In a bookbinding machine in which glue is applied to the backs of books carried past a glue spray in the form of a tube with a line of orifices, the glue spray being movable to and from spraying position, a flexible conduit connects a glue supply pipe-line to the interior of the tube to allow positional changes of the glue spray. The invention is described with reference to a bookbinding machine as in Specification 723,649, [Group XV], and utilizing a glue spray as in Specification 723,736. Two sprays A, B pass glue on to the backs of books carried between conveyer belts 57, 58 and a third spray C glues a back lining strip just before it is pressed into contact with the books and the edges turned over the book edges, all three sprays being moved into operative position by a hand lever 47. Each spray comprises a tube 1 closed by a rubber cap 2 receiving glue through a bore 6 in an inner rod 5, and bores 7 and 9 in a block 8 coaxial with the tube 1, the bore 9 forming the outlet port of a truncated conical cock member 10 actuated by a lever 11 for varying the rate of flow of glue from an inlet main 12 receiving the lower end of a flexible rubber pipe 13 secured to a branch 15 of a manifold pipe 16 fed by gravity through pipe 17 from an overhead tank maintained constantly charged at a predetermined level by a pump circulating the glue from a reservoir disposed in the rear. The spray is mounted for movement towards and away from the work by an extension 8a of member 8, slotted vertically at 25 to receive a screw 26 threaded into a bracket 27 having a vertical shaft 28 rotatable in a bracket 29 carried by machine frame member 30, the shaft 28 having a collar 28a normally locked to the bracket 29 by a spring-loaded pin 28b slidable in a lug 28d on the collar to engage a recess in the bracket and retractable to allow the sprays to be moved away from the work. To move the sprays into and out of operative position, the collar 28a has a radial fork 42 connected by a link 43 to one limb of a bellcrank lever 44 mounted on a pin 45 and actuated by a rod 46 to which the lever 47 is connected at 47a, the lever being fulcrumed at 47b. The rod 46 has a notch 46a engageable, on movement of the rod 46 by the lever 47, by a pin 48 on a trigger 49 pivoted at 50 and loaded by a compression spring 51 in the non-operative position, the sprays being moved to working position by springs 56 between the fork 42 and pivot pin 45 when the trigger 49 is released by a foot pedal connected thereto by a cable 53 carried through a tube 54. The amount of glue passing into the tube 1 is adjustable by the lever 11 by hand and fine adjustment is obtained by the lever 11 being engaged by a disc 22 rotating about an eccentric pin 23 in a block 24 formed integral with a segmental plate 24b secured to the block 8 and having an index mark 24a. The disc is moved by a fingerpiece 22c until the required graduation 22b is opposite the mark 24a. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 723,736.
