shaft 8 is a piston-chamber 9. Located within the shaft 8 is a shaft 10, having a crank 12 at one end and a piston 13 at its opposite extremity, said piston being'within the pistonchamber 9. Also fitted in said piston-chamber 9 is an abutment 14, in which a port 15 is formed for the admission of compressed air or other motive fluid delivered to said port by a nipple 16, inserted in a recess of the piston-chamberand communicating with a pipe 6o 17, leading to a source of supply. Passing through and threaded into the Wall of the piston-chamber is a screw 1S, upon which may be placed a jam-nut 19 for the purpose of securing said screw against movement whenithasbeenadjusted. Thisscrewserves to limit the movement of the piston within the chamber by'engag'ing a Wing 13', projecting from the hub 132 of the piston, said hub being keyed to or otherwise secured to the 7o shaft 10, as illustrated in Fig. et. Atits open end the piston-chamber is closed by a cap 0r cover 20, having an arcuate slot 20 for the reception of a pin 21, carried by said wing13' of the piston, and also riveted or otherwise secured to said cover-plate 20 is a plate 22, through which the pin 2l passes, said plate serving to prevent leakage of air or other fluid employed through the slot A20. and projecting from the piston-chamber is a bracket 24, in a slot of which is a set-screw 25, this screw 'connecting said bracket with an adjustable arm 26, carrying a pin 27, to which the other end of the spring 23 isat- 85 tached, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fitted in a guideway of the head S' of tubular shaft 8 is a slide 28, said slide having a slot 2S for the reception of a `pin 29, projecting from a anged head 30 of the sleeve, 9o for actuating the mechanism to be operated, said mechanism being designatedin a general way by the numeral 3l. Thismechanism consists in the exemplification vgiven of a cup-like carrier 32, containing a pair of friction-disks Ctandb, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3,) fully disclosed in my application tiled August 25, 1902, Serial No. 120,953,0f which the present case is a division.
On the frame of the machine is mounted a roo bracket'33, carrying a valve-chamber 34,
within which is located a valve and a spring 36 for returning the valve after it has been actuated by means hereinafter described to permit ud'to pass to the pipe or conduit 17. Communicating with a port of the valve-chamber is a supply-pipe 37, and
i leading from another port of said chamber is a nipple 38, over which the end of the pipe perforated caps 39 and 40, respectively, andl the valve 35 is connected to a rod 41, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6, Designated by 42 is a lever, (shown pivoted to the frame 1,) said lever being connected at its lower extremity to said rod 41.
Mounted on the carriage are adjustable brackets 43 and 44, respectively, containing screw- stops 45 and 46, respectively, and also pin- stops 47 and 48,- respectively, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 8, and Pivoted to the frame is a lever 49, carrying a pair of stops 50 51, which are actuated by the screw-stops of the brackets 43 and 44, said lever constituting a part of mechanism, not necessary to be shown in this application, for controlling the movement of the reciprocatory carriage, this mechanism being fully disclosed in my application Serial No. 120,953 aforesaid.
Carried by the tail-stock 6 is a center 52 and by the slide 28 of head 8' is a companion center 53, said centers serving to support between them what is shown as a reamerblank 54, the lands or ribs of which are to be relieved by a grinding or other tool. (Not shown.) One of the friction-disks (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3) may be connected in any desired Way With a reamer-blank-as, for
instance, by a lathe-dog 55, shown attached to said friction-disk by a clamp 56, which may be of any suitable kind.
While my invention is described as appertaining to a particular machine for relieving the teeth ot tinted tools, yet it is distinctly to be understood that it is n ot limited thereto, for the improved motor mechanism may be employed in other machines Without departure from the invention.
In the operation of my improvement the mechanism Works as follows: When'it is desired to operate the motor mechanism for the purpose of actuating either a blank or part of a machine or other article to which said mechanism may be applied, one of the pinstops of the brackets on the carriage will come into Contact with the lever 42-for instance, upon the movement of the carriage toward the left-and will engage said lever abovepits pivot, thereby rocking the same and throwing the valve to the necessary position to admit iuid to the valve-chamber 34, the fluid from said chamber passing through the pipe 17, the nipple 16, and lport 15 in the abutment 14 of the piston-chamber 9, and thus imparting movement to the piston 13 in said chamber until such movement is resisted by the impact ot' the ange 13/ against the end of the adjustable screw 18.

ries with it the crank-shaft 10, and as said crank engages the wrist-pin 28 of sleeve 30it will rock the carrier 32, secured to said sleeve, and through the connections described impart movement tothe device or article to be actuated. In this rocking movementof the piston the spring 33 was of course distended, and upon the completion of said movement when the carriage starts to return to the right and the stop is withdrawn from its engagement with the end of the lever 42 the spring will force the valve to its closed position, and.
said spring 23 will by its connection With pin 21 return the parts to the position they occu-y pied before tluid was admitted to the pistonchamber. At the limit of the movement of the carriage 2 toward the right the pin-stop will engage the pivoted lever 42 below its pivot, and consequently impart the same movementv to the valve (t. e., move it in the same direction) as was imparted to it by the pin-stop to the lever and valve when the carriage reached the limit of its stroke toward the left, as above stated. In this Way upon the termination of the stroke of the carriage for which the stops are set in either direction the valve is actuated to admit fluid to the piston-chamber and the blank is indexed by the mechanism controlled by such i'luid.
My invention is not limited to the precise devices shown for accomplishing the results set forth, nor is it limited to any particular means for reciprocating the carriage of the machine, nor to any. particular construction of the piston-chamber, nor to the particular connection of the parts with the mechanism to be operated.
Changes in the form and proportions of the parts may also, be made Without departure from the invention, and said invention is not restricted in its use to any particular purpose, for it may be employed, as above stated. in various relations dierent from that shown.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A motor comprising a shaft; a piston secured to the shaft and having a Wing; apiston-chamber in which the piston and wing are mounted; means for supplying fluid under pressure to said chamber; abracket projecting from the piston-chamber; an arm adjustably secured to the bracket; and a spring connected at one end to the piston and at its opposite extremity to said Wing.
2. Amotor comprisingashaft; apistonhaving a projection secured to the shaft a piston-chamber; means for supplying fluid to said chamber; a slotted cover for the pistonchamber; a stud secured to the projection of the piston and passing through the slot in the cover; and a spring secured at one end to the stud and at its other end to a fixed support. A motor comprising a piston-chamber; a piston in said chamber; a shaft; a fluid-supply conduit leading to the piston-chamber; a valve-chamber having ports; a valve in said valve-chamber, said lvalve having a longitudinal passage and ports opening therefrom; a pressure-supply pipe communicating with one of the ports of the valve-chamber; a conduit 'leading from the port of said Valve-chamber to the piston-chamber a valve-actuating rod; and a spring for retracting the valve.
9. A motor comprising a piston-chamber; a piston in said chamber; a shaft; a pressuresupply pipe leading to the piston-chamber; a spring connected to the piston and serving to retract the same after the supply of pressure is cut off; a valve-chamber having ports; a valve having reduced portions, a longitudinal passage, and ports in said reduced portions FRANCIS G.
