Abstract

788,063. Moulding resin tubes. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd. Jan. 5, 1956 [Oct. 6, 1954], No. 28742/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] Fibre-reinforced tubes are centrifugally moulded by a process in which fibre 6 is assembled between the inner wall of the mould 1 and the outer wall of a perforated inner tube 4, made of a polymerized styrene compound and which comprises introducing inside the perforated inner tube a liquid resinous composition which is a monomeric styrene compound mixed with a compound copolymerizable therewith, e.g., an unsaturated polyester resin, rotating the mould so that the liquid resinous composition passes by centrifugal force through the perforations in the tube 4 to fill the air spaces between the fibres and . curing the resin while still rotating the mould. It is stated that the effect of the monomeric styrene compound is that the resinous composition becomes integrally bonded to the inner tube when cured. The size and number of the perforations 5 should be as small as possible consistent with an easy passage of the resinous composition. The fibrous material may be glass, asbestos, textile or metal filaments and may be in any suitable form such as rovings, woven fabrics or mats. Rovings may be packed into the space between the inner tube and the mould when the two are assembled, or woven fabric can first be wrapped round the inner tube, or glass rovings wound spirally round it, before insertion in the mould. End flanges 2 may be clamped on the mould to provide a resin-tight seal and the spindles 3 may be hollow to permit the introduction of an inert gas or to allow the resinous composition to be added after the end caps have been fitted. Heat is applied in any convenient way to cure or partially to cure the resin. If the cure is partial the tube can be removed from the mould and modified in shape, e.g. bent, before being finally cured by further heating. The speed of rotation should be low at first, and should not exceed that sufficient to cause the resinous composition to pass through the perforations. A suitable unsaturated polyester resin for use in the resinous composition may be obtained by esterifying saturated polyhydric alcohols, e.g., ethylene glycol, with alpha-betaunsaturated acids, e.g. maleic acid. Copolymers of styrene having a greater toughness than polystyrene are suitable for the inner tube, which is preferably extruded from toughened polystyrene, i.e. a polystyrene to which has been added a toughening agent such as rubber. Specifications 712,939 and 767,118 [Group XXVIII] are referred to.
