Abstract
787,886. Road-vehicle undercarriages; railway vehicle axles. GAEBLER, G. A. March 23, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 9204/56. Classes 103(6) and 108(2) A dual purpose vehicle for use alternatively as a railway truck, or as the load-carrying part of a lorry, has a first axle 5 adjacent one end of the vehicle, and fixed against longitudinal movement, and a second axle 8 connected to a bearer frame 12 displaceable longitudinally from a first position (Fig. 1), adjacent the axle 5 to a second position (Fig. 2), adjacent the other end of the vehicle, each axle carrying flanged rail wheels 9, and having provision for the addition of rubber-tyred road wheels 10, and means being provided for locking the frame 12 in each of the first and second positions. The frame 12 is slidable in inclined guide rails 13 mounted on longitudinal bearers of the vehicle. For use on the roads with the road wheels 10 secured to the axles 5 and 8, the frame 12 is disposed in its position adjacent the axle 5 as shown in Fig. 1. The other end of the vehicle is supported at 2 by a tractor vehicle 3. On changing to rails, a supporting prop 4 is lowered, and the frame 12 is wound by means of a cable drum (Fig. 5, not shown) to a position at the other end of the vehicle. The road wheels 10 are then removed. The cable drum may be operated manually, hydraulically, or electrically, or from the tractor vehicle 3.
