The condition of a precision scale 4 is checked by means of a local-viewing television system in which the image of spot of light from a source 1 is formed on the scale and subjected to mutually perpendicular oscillatory deflections by electromagnetically controlled optical deflectors 8 and 12 operating respectively at a high and low frequency, e.g. 50 and 3 cycles per second, reflected light being received by a photoelectric cell 15 and applied to control the intensity of the beam of a cathode-ray display tube 16 scanned synchronously with the deflectors. Sinusoidal current to drive deflector 8 is derived via transformer 9 from the supply R, whilst sinusoidal, sawtooth or triangular current to drive deflector 12 is derived from a suitable circuit 13.
