Abstract
The deposition of salts in the tube system of a forced flow steam generator which normally operates at or above the critical point of the working medium is avoided or is caused to occur at predetermined places by subjecting the feedwater to a so-called total salts elimination treatment such that its residual salts content after the treatment consists predominantly of one or more compounds of ammonium. The treatment may comprise conventional cation exchange followed by anion exchange but in which the anion exchanger (or at least the last anion exchanger) is regenerated with ammonium hydroxide. The anion exchange mass of a mixed bed ion exchanger (preceded by separate cation and anion exchangers) may be regenerated with ammonium hydroxide. A base exchanger followed by a vaporiser may be regenerated with an ammonium compound. In a complete steam power plant steam passes from a forced flow generator to a turbine and thence to a condenser. The condensate passes through a mixed-bed ion-exchange plant to a feed water tank whence it is pumped back to the generator. The ion-exchange bed is regenerated with ammonium hydroxide. In a precipitation softening plant followed by a vaporizer the raw water may be softened by precipitation of hardness-forming salts by ammonium carbonate or hydroxide.
