Abstract

1,063,269. Steam boilers combined with air-conditioning plant; refrigerating. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Aug. 12, 1964 [Aub. 20, 1963], No. 32925/63. Headings F4A and F4H. In an auxiliary steam raising system for motor ships the exhaust gases from the engine are used to produce high- and low-pressure steam, the low-pressure steam being used to operate an air-conditioning plant. An oil-fired boiler 10 generating high-pressure steam has heat-exchange tubes 13 which are supplemented by a heat exchanger 14 mounted in a trunking 12 through which the exhaust gases pass. Steam from the boiler may be taken directly from a pipe 32, or be passed through a superheater 34 also mounted in the trunking, or be supplied to a low-pressure steam pipe 22 through a pressure-reducing valve 36. A separate lowpressure steam generator comprises a drum 20 and a heat exchanger 18 mounted in the trunking. Low-pressure steam is supplied to an ejector 24 connected to a flash chamber 26 from which chilled water is circulated by a pump 27 to an air-conditioning unit 28, the effluent of which is returned to the flash chamber. The effluent of the ejector is collected in a condenser 30 from which it is pumped to provide make-up water for the flash chamber and to a tank 42 where it provides feed water for the boiler 10. A calorifier 46, which may be thermostatically controlled, may be used to heat the water supplied to the air-conditioning unit. Additional heating for the low-pressure boiler may be provided by fitting a heating coil, supplied with high-pressure steam, in the low-pressure boiler drum 20.
