Abstract

786,892. Grinding spherical surfaces. AUTOFLOW ENGINEERING, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1956 [Nov. 13, 1954], No. 32940/54. Class 60. A machine for grinding spherical surfaces, e.g., either side of a meniscus, comprises a head which carries a rotatable spindle provided with an annular grinding or polishing wheel and can be rotated to set it at the desired angle for the particular dioptre concerned by a handoperated spindle 4 arranged also to rotate at a relatively-increased angular movement and through spur gearing a graduated indicator drum 7 designed to co-operate with a stationary indicator to give direct dioptre readings. The head is mounted on a shaft 1 which is driven by the shaft 4 through worm gearing 2, 3 and has mounted thereon a spur wheel 5 co-operating with internal spur teeth 6 on the drum 7 which is arranged to rotate within a fixed casing 10. The periphery of the drum has graduations to give direct dioptre readings in relation to a marking or scale on a window 9 in the casing, readings for convex surfaces being on one side of the drum and those for concave surfaces on the other side. Brake rings 11 on the side walls of the casing engage the rim of the drum to hold the latter in its set position and a screw then clamps the shaft 1 in its bearing.
