942,390. Friction gauges. MASCHINNOELEKTROTECHNITSCHESKI INSTITUT. Feb. 8. 1960 [Feb. 7,1959], No. 4427/60. Heading G1S. A device for indicating the amount of friction created between two surfaces and thereby determining the coefficient of friction comprises a rotatable wheel 3 or a tyre 7 mounted on the rim of the wheel and constituting one surface, and a block 8 constituting the other surface bearing on the surface of the wheel or tyre and being freely supported on an arm 6 adapted to pivot about the axis of the wheel. Weights 9 are supported by the arm 6 to provide the loading on the block 8 causing the latter to bear against the wheel or tyre and the position of the weights may be varied along the arm to vary the position of the centre of gravity of the combined block arm and weights. The arm carries a pointer which registers with a calibrated scale so that rotation of the wheel causes a deflection of the arm such that the pointer registers with a point on the scale corresponding to the coefficient of friction between the two surfaces.
