Abstract
662,555. Testing balance of rotary apparatus. JACKSON, E. R. May 11, 1950 [March 29, 1949], No. 8093/49. Class 106 (ii). Apparatus for testing the static balance of rotary bodies comprises a freely rotatable shaft 10 on one end of which the body to be tested is adapted to be mounted, a sleeve 17 freely rotatable on the shaft and coupled to the shaft through a spring 20, and means for indicating the angular positions of the shaft and the sleeve. The end of the shaft carrying the test-body is supported by a pair of discs 11 mounted on ball-bearings and its other end is supported in a ballbearing 13. A torsion spring 20 is secured at one end to a stud 22 in a collar 23 fast'on the shaft, the stud 22 being balanced by a stud 24, and its other end is secured to a stud 21 in the sleeve 17, which is mounted on ball-bearings on the shaft. When the test-body has come to rest, the angular position of the shaft is observed by reading a graduated disc 14 through a sighting hole 15 and a pointer 26, held frictionally against rotation on the sleeve 17, is set to the zero of a suitably calibrated scale 27. The sleeve 17 is then rotated by handles 19 until the test-body has been turned through 90 degrees as indicated by the graduations of the disc 14. The angular movement of the sleeve is observed by means of the pointer 26 and scale 27, the difference between this movement and that of the test-body corresponding with the twist in the spring and hence with the moment necessary to hold the test-body 90 degrees from its position of rest.
