Abstract

786,648. Welding by fusion. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Jan. 30,1956 [Feb. 2, 1955], No. 3051/55. Class 83 (4). In an arc welding pistol in which a filler wire is fed to an arc produced by a non-consumable electrode, the wire feed mechanism including the driving motor is located within the piston. The driving motor 12 together with a cooling fan 13 is carried within the handle 1 and through gearing drives a toothed feed roller 14 which is in mesh with a similar roller 15 spring urged towards the roller 14. Wire 18 is gripped in grooves in the feed rollers 14, 15 and is fed from a flexible guide 11 through a rigid tube 19 which passes outside the water-cooled gas nozzle 3 to guide the wire 18 to a point adjacent the tip of the electrode 22. A flexible tube 4 connected to the rear of the pistol contains conduits for argon and water and the electrical supply conductors. Movement of the trigger 32 to an intermediate position operates a relay to connect up the welding current and complete actuation of the trigger in addition operates the wire feed motor 12. A push-button 35 serves as an independent control for the motor 12.
