Abstract

1,080,125. Welding by fusion. M. M. KENSRUE. May 19, 1966, No. 22361/66. Heading B3R. In an arc welding gun having an electrode feed motor driven by compressed air, the exhaust from the motor is directed towards the welding portion of the gun and acts as a cooling agent. The motor 14 is in the handle of the gun and exhausts through a tube 142 into the welding end of the barrel 72. The air passes rearwardly over a finned electrode guide tube 24 and exhausts through a nozzle 146 universally pivotable on the rear end of the gun. The motor 14 drives a knurled feed roll 28 which co-operates with an adjustably spring- loaded roll 56. Argon is fed through the guide tube 24 to a gas nozzle 16. Compressed air and direct welding current are fed to the gun through a common cable comprising an aluminium or copper solid or braided tube surrounded by an insulating sheath. The gun is provided with a needle valve for controlling the feed rate. The wire reel may be mounted on the gun or at a remote location with the air and argon control valves.
