Abstract
786,423. Coffee machines. ROTA, B. April 12, 1954 [April 11, 1953], No. 10781/54. Class 129. [Also in Group XXVIII] A variable-stroke " Espresso " coffee machine consists of a main casing 1, Fig. 1, bolted to the boiler and supporting a stepped cylinder liner 3 which is held in position by a screwed dome 4. There is a vented air space 5 between the liner 3 and the casing 1. The dome 4 carries a plunger 12 which may be raised against a compression spring 15 by an eccentrically pivoted hand lever 17. On raising the plunger 12, a stepped, free piston 19 is forced upwards within the liner 3 by water from the boiler which enters the larger bore of the liner 3 beneath the upper part of the piston 19 via a non-return valve 9 and passage 11. As the piston 19 rises, it contacts and lifts a rod 30, thereby moving the hand-lever 17 over dead-centre. The rod 30 is of variable length so that the effective stroke of the piston 19 can be varied. The plunger 12 then descends under spring loading. The water in the upper part of liner 3 is now forced by the descending piston through a passage 24, Fig. 2, and valve 29 into the smaller bore of the liner 3 and hence through the coffee filter. The valve 29 has an operating stem 23 passing through the piston 19 and is opened by the pressure of the descending plunger 12 acting against a spring 27.
