Abstract

786,247. Starting prime movers; substituting machines in service. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. March 1, 1956 [March 10, 1955],No. 6418/56. Class 38 (4). In a standby power supply arrangement wherein a standby generator is driven by an internal combustion engine a gear-wheel associated with the starter motor for the engine is engaged with the engine immediately after the engine has stopped so that upon initiating the starting operation no time is lost in engaging the starter motor with the engine. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus in readiness for starting the engine. In starting, the operating coil of a relay R2 is energized thereby energizing the operating coil of a relay M1 to raise a latch S. Relay coil M2 is thus energized to open a fuel cock or complete the ignition circuit for the engine. The operating coil of a relay R3 is also energized which then allows relay R1 to be energized, the contact of which completes the circuit of a starter motor A to a battery B, thereby starting the engine by means of the meshed gears F, D. When the engine has started these gears are disengaged by a spring since the latch S is raised, the latch S being then maintained raised by the shaft G as shown in Fig. 2. Operation of the relay R3 effects a supply of current to the operating coil of a delayed action relay R5. The delay period of this relay allows the engine a certain time in which to start; if during this time the engine does not start the relay operates, thereby deenergized relays R1, R2, R3 over its upper contact and operating an alarm by means of its centre contact. Its lower contact is a selfmaintaining contact, de-energization of the relay being effected by a push-button T. If, however, the engine starts and the gears F, D are disengaged a contact K2 is opened, thereby deenergizing relay R3 and, in consequence, relay R1, so that the current to the starter motor ceases. An economy contact is also opened. To stop the engine relay R2 is de-energized, and subsequently relay coil M2 contacts K1, K2, K3 are then closed so that a relay R4 is energized and is maintained energized over a contact in parallel with contact K3. Relay R5 is now energized and an impulse generator E supplies the relay R1 with impulses which cause the gears F, D to re-engage when the latch S falls to lock them into engage. The relay R5 also governs the period for this operation. When the latch S falls the relays are de-energized. The starter motor may have a slidable rotor or a gear co-operating with a screwed shaft.
