Abstract

The colour-fastness of films, yarns, filaments and like products having a basis of cellulose acetate is improved by incorporating in the casting or spinning dope a minor proportion, e.g. 0.04-5 per cent, preferably 0.04-2 per cent, by weight of the cellulose acetate of a vinylpyridine or polymer thereof having in the monomeric form the formula <FORM:0785497/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl, n is 1 or 2 and alkyl groups not having more than 12 carbon atoms may be attached to the heterocyclic ring. Homopolymers of such compounds and copolymers with other compounds having a vinyl group and particularly with conjugated diolefins having 4-6 carbon atoms, such as butadiene, may be used. The preferred compound is poly-2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, but many other such compounds are specified. The casting or spinning solution generally comprises a 5-35 per cent solution of the acetate in acetone, but other solvents such as acetonyl acetone, dioxane, methyl acetate, ethyl lactate, furfural or chloroform may be used. If a dull yarn is required titanium dioxide is added to the solution. Dye may also be added, but generally the product is dyed after casting or spinning. Specifications 656,727, 691,965, 692,016, [Group III], 744,244 and U.S.A. Specification 2,491,472 are referred to.
