[Also in Group VII] A machine for presenting and attaching a binding strip to a marginal portion of the surface and to the peripheral edge of a sole blank with a portion of the strip upstanding around the perimeter has a freely rotatable binding strip supporting roll 18 to position and support the strip, a bevelled roll 23 the bevelled surface whereof supports the sole blank from beneath and applies the strip to the surface of the sole, and an edge gauge roll 24 to engage and press the binding strip into a right-angle position relatively to the supported surface of the sole and into contact with the edge of the sole. In operation the sole blank 50 is supported on an adjustable roll 23 freely rotatable about an axis inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal. The binding strip 51 is supported and positioned by an adjustable flat roll 18 which is free to turn about a horizontal axis and engages the bottom edge of the strip, the end of the strip being caught between the edge of blank 50 and a gauge roll 24 rotatable about a vertical axis, the upstanding portion of the strip being caught between roll 24 and the rim of roll 23 to urge the vertex of the strip into a right-angle formation beneath the sole. A deflector 25 on roll 24 turns over the marginal portions of the strip into the range of a feeding foot 12 driven by eccentrics on shaft 9. The machine is then set into operation and foot 12 advances the sole away from the operator strip 51, which is adhesively coated on the flange 51<SP>1</SP> and other blank contacting portions, being progressively attached to the blank. The machine is stopped when the attached end of the strip is in proximity to blade 38. Handles 37 and 43 are then depressed against the pull of spring 32, to raise blade 38 about axis 30 and swing it outwardly about the inclined axis of boss 35 into contact with the attached end of strip 51. Handle 43 is then swung upwardly, against spring 44, to sever the band at a gauged point so that it will exactly butt the attached end. When the handles are released springs 32 and 44 return them to positions determined by the adjustable stop screw 33 and the engagement of bolts 42 on one blade member with the ends of slots in the other blade member. The machine is restarted to attach the free end of the strip. The auxiliary frame 13 carrying the blades &c. may be pivoted about shaft 46, against the pull of a spring, for the introduction and removal of work.
