Fig. 14 is a fragmental elevational view illustrating a modified form of actuating means for the knife. I 1
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 10 designates a table or support on which is mounted a slicing machine l2, embodying the invention, fixed to said support by a clamp l3. The machine I 2 comprises a base l5'having a top surface I 6 and being provided with a raised portion I! having a top wall l8, side walls l9 and 20 and end walls 2|. The side wall l9 defines one side of the base and the surface or wall l6 extends to one side of the other side wall 20. The end walls 2| are located inwardly of the outer ends of the base, providing ledges 2Ia at the opposite ends of the base, disposed flush with the wall I6.
Fixed to the wall I6 is a housing 22 substantially closed on one side by wall 23 and open on the opposite side, and having an end wall 24 at one end and a top wall 25 at the top forming said end wall. Rotatably mounted on said wall 23 is a shaft 26 to which there is fixed a pinion 21 and a circular cutter blade or knife 28. The
It will now be understood that upon rotating the crank handle 32, the blade 28 will rotate. As shown in Fig. 1, the wall 23 is cut away as at 29, to expose a portion of the cutting edge or periphery of the blade 28.
Means is provided for reciprocating the object or food to be sliced past the blade 28. To this end, there extends upwardly from the four corners of the top wall [8, lugs 36 supporting a pair of parallel rods or rails 31 fixed at the ends thereof to the tops of said lugs, and being spaced above said wall. Slidably mounted on the rods 31 is a carriage 40 comprising a bottom corrugated wall 4| and an upstanding wall 42 at oneend of said corrugated wall. Fixed to the underside of said corrugated wall 4| are pairs of symmetrically disposed, angle-shaped members-A4, each having a horizontal wall 44a fixed to the underside of said corrugated wall, and a downwardly extending wall 45 formed with an open ing 46 receiving therethrough one of the rods 31. An angle-shaped plate 42d fixed to the wall 42 and having a wall 42b extending away therefrom, serves as a handle for manipulating the carriage.
It will now be understood that the carriage 40 may be reciprocated parallel to the circular cutter 28, whereby the food to be sliced mounted on the carriage, may be brought past the cutter for the slicing operation. Mounted on said carriage is a member 50 for gripping the food on the sliding carriage, to hold it rigid during the slicing operation. The member 50 may be made of sheet metal and comprises a vertical wall 5| parallel to the rods 31 and being formed with spurs-52; preferably cut from the metal thereof and projecting toward the rotary blade. Extending from the wall 5| at right angles thereto is a vertical wall 53 contacting the wall 42 and having at the upper end thereof a folded over edge, 55, forming a groove slidably receiving the upper edge 56 of said wall 42. It will now be understood that the member 50 may be moved in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the carriage, whereby to press the food toward the cutting blade.
Means is provided for adjusting the thickness of the slices. To this end, the wall I6 is formed adjacent one end thereof with an arcuate slot 60. The end wall 20 is formed (as shown in Fig. 5) with a boss SI, to which there is screwed a vertical screw 62 having a smooth shank portion 63, and a head 64 at the lower end thereof. Rotatably mounted on the shank portion 63 of the screw 62 and supported by the head 64 is a lever 65 having an arm 66 extending below the wall 16, provided with a handle 61 extendin through the slot 60. The lever 65 is further provided with an arm 68, at the other end of which there is a cammed flange 69.
The walls I 9 and 20 of the base are formed with bearing openings I9a and 20a, slidably receiving therethrough a shaft I0. Fixed to one end II of said shaft is a gauge or guide plate 12 disposed substantially parallel to the rotary blade 28 and having 'an arcuate edge I3 substantially conforming to the exposed edge of said blade. Fixed to the plate I2 is a guide pin I5 extending through an opening I6 in wall 20.
Mounted on the rod I is a plate 80 having an opening 8| receiving said rod therethrough and being fixed thereto by a set screw 82. The plate 80 is provided at the bottom thereof with a horizontal lug 83 contacting the underside of the cam 60. There is further mounted on the rod I0 a block 85 likewisehaving an opening 86 receiving the rod therethrough and being fixed thereto by a set screw 81. The block 85 is formed with a recess 90 receiving a spring pressed rounded plunger 92 contacting the inner surface 69a. of the cammed flange 69. The outer surface 69b of said cammed flange contacts the member 80. It will now be understood that the cammed flange is received between the members 80 and 85. Upon turning the handle 61, the lever 65 will rotate about its axis 62 and will cause sliding movement of the rod '10 by'reason of the engagement of the cam 69 between the members 80 and 85, which are fixed to said rod. 7
The edge 60a of the wall I6 adjacent the arcuate slot 60 may be provided with a scale 93 to indicate the position of the gauge plate I2, and hence to indicate the thickness of the slices. The scale may he graduated to indicate the number of slices per inch. 7
It will now be noted that a very fine adjustment may be obtained, since a swing of the lever 65through a substantial angle will move the rod I0 a comparatively short distance. H
The clamp I3 is provided with a vertical wall I00, preferably having cut out portions IM to reduce the weight thereof. Extending from the lower end of the wall I00 is a lug I02 provided with a screw threaded opening I03. Extending from the upper end of the wall I00 on one side thereof is a short arm I04 having a downwardly extending flat edge I parallel to the wall I00. Extending from the other end of the wall I00 is a longer arm I06 having a downwardly projecting circular pin portion I01. The wall I6 of the base of the machine is provided adjacent one end thereof with a circular opening IIO rotatably receiving the pin portion I0'I. The adjacent ledge 2 la. is formed with a depression I I I for receiving the edge I05 of the arm I04 of the clamp.
Received within the screw threaded opening I03 of the lug I02 is a screw II3 having a finger piece I I4 at the bottom end thereof, and a plate H5 at the upper end thereof, adapted to contact the underside of the table or support I0. It will now be understood that upon screwing the screw H3 against the underside of the table, the arms I04 and I06 will be pressed against the ledge 2Ia and wall I6 of the base, and the edge I05 and pin I07 will be retained within the depression II I and opening I I0 for clamping the machine firmly to the support I0. The clamp may be released by merely unscrewing the screw II3 sufficiently to release the edge I05 from the recess III. It will be noted that when the clamp is fixed in position, the machine cannot rotate with respect to the clamp.
Means is provided for sharpening the rotary blade 28. Extending from the wall 23 of the blade housing 22 and adjacent the top wall 25, is a lug I having an opening I2I disposed in a vertical plane, and an adjacent inclined opening I22. The sharpening device I23 comprises a curved member I25 having a handle portion I26 at one end and being provided with a pin I2'I at the opposite end. At an intermediate portion thereof the member I25 is formed with a bearing I28 receiving therethrough a shaft I29. Mounted on one end' of the shaft is a grinding wheel I30, and fixed to the other end of the shaft is a nut I3I.
It will be noted that when the pin I2'I is received within the opening I2 I, the grinding wheel 30 will be disposed in a vertical plane and may be moved by manipulating the handle portion I26 against the flat surface 28b of the blade 28. However, the member I25 may be lifted to remove the pin I2'I from the opening I2I and said pin may then be inserted within the inclined opening I 22 to bring the wheel I 30 into an inclined plane, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings. By manipulating the handle I28, the wheel I30 may then be brought against the inclined surface 28a of the blade. With the grind ing wheel against the surface 280, or 281), rotation of the blade will cause a quick sharpening of the blade. When the grinder is not in use, the same may be entirely removed from the machine.
In Figs. 9 to 13, inclusive, there is shown a modified form of grinding implement. As shown in said figures, the housing 22a for the rotary blade 28 is provided adjacent the top thereof with a cut away portion I40. The top wall 25a and the side wall 23a of said housing are cut away to expose a portion of the blade 28 at the top. The wall 23a of the housing is formed with a lug I4I below the edge I40a formed by the cutaway portion I40. Said lug MI is formed with a vertical through opening I42. The grinding device I23a shown in Figs. 9 to 13, inclusive, may
all)
be mounted on the lug I l! in operative and inoperative positions, as willbe more clearly hereinafter explained. Said device I23a comprises a vertical pin Hi l, the bottom end of which is receiv-cd withi the opening 542 of the lug I4I. Fixed to an intermediate portion of the pin I44 is a Z-shaped guard I45. The guard comp-rises a bottom wall I i;
fixed to said pin by a screw Hi8. Extending upwardly from the wall M5 is an inclined wall I50, and extending from said inclined wall is an outwardly extending wall I5I. Said wall I5I sub stantially corresponds to the portion of the top wall 25a which has been cut away. Thus, in the position shown in Fig. 12, with the grinding device in inoperative position, the guard substantially covers the cut away portion I40, and hence completes the housing 22a for covering the top portion of the rotary blade 28.
Fixed to the upper end of'the pin I44 is a housing I 55, preferably made of two parts I500. and I682), screwed together by a screw IN. The housing portion I'GBb may be formed with an internal boss I62, on which is rotatablymounted a circular vertical grinding wheel I63. Fixed to the inside of the housing part Ifiila is a boss 52a, on which is rotatably mounted an inclined circular grinding wheel "53a. The bottom of the housing part ISIla is cut away as at IN, to receive the top of the blade 28 when the grinding device is in operative position.
In the position shown in Fig. 12, the guard I45 covers the cut away portion I 40 of the blade housing 22a and the housing I50 is turned away from the blade housing. In this position the grinding device is not in use. However, the grinding device may be moved to the position shown in Fig. by lifting said device, turning the same 180 deg, and then reinserting the pin I44 within the opening I42. In this position the guard I45 is turned away from the blade and the grinding wheels I53 and "5311 contact opposite surfaces of the portion of the blade. Rotation of the blade will then cause the outer edge thereof to be ground and sharpened on both surfaces, which projects into housing I60 through opening I61.
For turning the rotary blade, a flywheel I H! as shown in Fig. 14 of the drawings may be substituted for the crank handle 32, said flywheel being mounted on the shaft SI and having a handle Ill adjacent the periphery. With this construction a greater uniformity of speed of the cutting blade 28 may be obtained.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
formed with an opening I41 1 receiving the pin hi4 therethrough and being As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanyingdrawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. v
