Abstract

785,462. Washing-machines. ADAMS, H. G., and ADAMS BROS. & BURNLEY, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1955 [Oct. 28, 1954], No. 31138/54. Class 138 (2). A rotary impeller for a washing machine comprises a one-piece disc-shaped member 5 provided with surface protuberances 9 and with apertures 12 formed within the confines of the disc and adapted and positioned so as to direct jets of liquid outwardly of the impeller in an approximately axial direction. Each protuberance 9 has a steep face 11 and a gradually sloped face 10 containing the aperture 12. Each aperture has a wall 13 inclined slightly to the vertical and adapted to exert a scooping action on the liquid. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate a modification in which the impeller is adapted to be rotated in the opposite direction to that in Fig. 1 and the opposite edge of each aperture is extended to form a sloping wall. The disc 5 is of dished section with a depending rim portion and is driven by a shaft mounted in the bottom or a side wall of the washing vessel.
