Abstract
The invention comprises 5-isobutyl-5-ethyl-1-methylthiobarbituric acid and its sodium, calcium and lithium salts, the preparation of the acid by reacting N-methylthiourea with an isobutyl-ethyl-malonic acid dialkyl ester in a solution of an alkali metal alkoxide in a lower (1-3C) aliphatic alcohol, or with a lower (1-4C) alkyl ester of isobutyl-ethyl-cyanoacetic acid followed by hydrolysis, and the preparation of the salts by reacting the acid with an aqueous alkali or with a metal alkoxide dissolved in the corresponding alcohol. The products are useful as surgical an sthetics. In examples: (1) isobutyl-ethyl-malonic acid diethyl ester and N-methylthiourea are refluxed with a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethyl alcohol; (2) and (4) 5-isobutyl-5-ethyl-1-methylthiobarbituric acid is reacted with a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethyl alcohol; (3) isobutyl-ethyl-cyanoacetic acid ethyl ester is reacted as in (1), and the resulting 5-isobutyl- 5 - ethyl - 1 - methyl - 4 - iminothiobarbituric acid is hydrolysed with dilute hydrochloric acid.
