784,958. Gear-cutting. CRAVEN BROS. (MANCHESTER), Ltd. June 13, 1956 [Aug. 10, 1955], No. 23024/55. Class 83 (3). A gear-hobbing machine, in which the hobbing head d can be replaced by a shaving head, comprises two headstocks for carrying a gear a with its axis horizontal, and a separate drive through each headstock, one b for rotating the gear at a low speed for hobbing and the other c at a high speed for shaving. Means is provided on the machine bed to support a gear to mesh with the hobbed gear for testing purposes, the gear then being shaved selectively.
