Abstract

784,863. Photo-conductors. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 7, 1955 [July 27, 1954], No. 21832/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (a)] Substantially uniform sensitivity and dark resistance is imparted permanently to the photo-conductive target of a discharge tube by scanning it with a defocused beam of high beam current whilst setting up a high voltage across gradient through the thickness of the target and illuminating it uniformly. The voltage across the target and the illumination may both be varied from a high to a low value several times. The material of the photo-conductive target is preferably a solid layer of antimony trisulphide superimposed on a spongy layer of the same material, but it may be zinc or cadmium sulphide. With the cathode at zero potential, 300 volts are applied to the limiter and anode electrodes, a variable 0-150 volts to the signal electrode and 15-200 foot candles illumination to the target. Alternatively the voltage of the signal electrode may be kept constant and the cathode potential varied. The impedance of the photo-conductive layer should not fall below 10 megohms.
