Abstract

784,761. Photographic production of inductance coils; contact printing apparatus. ALADDIN INDUSTRIES, Inc. Aug. 11, 1955 [Aug. 18, 1954], No. 23208/55. Class 98(2) Inductance coils are produced by exposing a cylindrical insulating former coated with at least one conductive layer and a photo-resist composition, through a mask of skewed strips constituting developed convolutions of the ultimate coil winding, dissolving away the unexposed portions and etching the conductive layer. In an example a cylindrical tube or rod of insulating material such as glass or synthetic resin is silvered, preferably by immersion in stannous chloride and hydrochloric acid, washing and immersion in ammoniacal silver and formaldehyde. The silver layer is then coated with copper as by electroplating and then another thin layer of silver is applied as by flash coating in a bath of silver and potassium cyanides. This second silver coating acts as a reflecting layer and reduces the exposure time of the lightsensitive layer which is next applied and may be any photo-engraving enamel such as bichromated colloid. The sensitive layer is then exposed through the mask and the unexposed portions removed in the usual manner. The silver layer so exposed and the underlying copper are etched away with ferric chloride and the bottom layer of silver is then removed with a solution of potassium ferricyanide and sodium thiosulphate. The resist may then be removed to leave helical turns of metal on the insulating cylinder, and the product may be coated all over with a styrene resin. The mask is formed by photographing a frame carrying skew bars set up in the form of the pattern required. This mask may then be wrapped round the sensitized cylinder and exposed from all directions. Alternatively the mask may be part of a band which is moved over and in contact with the surface of the cylinder as it rotates past a light source, and an apparatus for performing this operation is shown in Fig. 6. The transparency 28 is wound between rollers 47, 48 across the light sensitive cylindrical blank 18 which is supported on idle rollers 56. Rollers 47, 48, 56 are driven from a motor 74 by worm 75 and belt 76. Exposure is by a lamp 80, and pressure rollers 58 are provided on top of the cylinder 18.
