784,572. Magnetic recorder reading or writing heads. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. March 17, 1955 [March 29, 1954], No. 14959/56. Divided out of 784,571, [Group XXXV]. Class 40 (2). A method of making a magnetic drum recorder reading or writing head comprises assembling an inductive coil 50 on a straight core 53 of magnetic strip material, e.g. transformer lamination material, bending round the ends of the strip, Fig. 3, so that they converge at an acute angle and the extremities are parallel to each other, inserting the coil and core in a hole 57 in a non-magnetic former 54, Fig. 4, with the parallel extremities of the core located in a slot 60 extending from the hole 57 at right angles to the coil axis, embedding the coil anp core in a casting resin by filling the hole therewith and hardening the resin, and then grinding away, Fig. 5, the former 54 resin and core 53 at the end of the slot 60 until the opposite ends of the core are separated by an appropriate gap. The coil 50 is wound with a decreasing number of turns per layer and the core 53 after being placed in the hole 57 is located therein by its ends being pulled through the slot 60 and then turned over (see Fig. 5). The resin is cast in a number of assemblies at the same time, Fig. 6, and a packing piece 63 fills the remainder of the slot 60 not occupied by the core ends. The grinding operation removes material to line Y-Y of Fig. 5 and further material to line XX is removed by a hand honing operation, the exact amount being determined by measuring the air gap with a microscope. Screws 58, 59 co-operating with oblique slots 55, 56 in the former 54 provide adjustment in the radial and circumferential directions respectively of the head with respect to the drum, not shown.
