Abstract
Fish meal for animal feed, especially poultry feed, and for fertilizer is made by adding to fish or fish waste quicklime or slaked lime in quantity not more than 10 per cent but sufficient to render the protein of the fish material non-hydrophilic, coarsely comminuting the mixture, drying it, and finally grinding it to a meal. Fat may be extracted from the fish material before the lime treatment. The presence of impurities such as magnesium and iron compounds in the lime is not undesirable, particularly if the product is to be used as fertilizer; supplements of fertilizing value may be incorporated in the final meal or in the lime used in preparing the meal.
