Abstract

Anthraquinone compounds, which contain at least four anthraquinone nuclei joined by -NH- bridges in 1,4-positions (i.e. linear arrangement) of which at least one is present as an anthrimide bridge, and at least one other is part of a carbazole nucleus, are treated with carbazolizing agents. The products dye or print cotton, linen, artificial silk, regenerated cellulose. In examples, the following are treated with aluminium chloride in pyridine (1) 1 : 11 - 41 : 111 - 411 : 1111 - tetranthrimide - 31,211 - carbazole, (2) 1 : 11 - 41 : 111 - 411 : 1111 - 4111 : 11111 - pentanthrimide - 2 : 21 - carbazole, (3) 4,4111 - dibenzoylamino - 1 : 11 - 41 : 111 - 411 : 1111 - tetranthrimide - 31 : 211 - carbazole. A dyeing example using cotton is given. The starting materials are prepared by condensing the corresponding amino-anthrimide carbazoles with halogenated anthraquinones.
