Abstract
784,372. Transformers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 11, 1955 [Nov. 11, 1954; Sept. 7, 1955; Oct. 19, 1955], No. 32285/55. Class 38 (2). A wide-band radio frequency transformer comprises a first balanced winding P consisting of two substantially symmetrical parts, a second balanced winding S also consisting of two symmetrical parts, the two balanced windings being spirally wound from metal strips or the like so as to be closely coupled, a balanced circuit being connected across one of the windings whilst an unbalanced circuit Z2 is connected across one part only of the other winding. The transformer windings are constructed of strips P, S having the requisite dimensions as determined by the transforma. tion ratio, the strips being provided with terminals A, B, M, D, E and being laid one above the other together with insulating members K. The assembly is then wound around a suitable magnetic core of high frequency material in a spiral manner as shown in Fig. 3. Since one section of each of the windings P, S is closer to the magnetic core than the other section, the differences in leakage inductances and selfcapacitances are compensated for by changing the thickness of the insulation K along the strip, by variation in the widths of the metal strips or by differences in the lengths of the two sections in each winding. When a greater transformation ratio is required one or more of the turns of the strip may be replaced by a plurality of serially-connected turns as shown in Fig. 9.
