Abstract

784,289. Cutting tubes. LILLA EDETS PAPPERSBRUKS AKTIEBOLAG. July 6, 1956 [July 7,.1955], No. 21035/56. Class 31 (1). A machine for cutting tubes 37 of paper, pasteboard or similar fibrous or plastic material into lengths comprises a core 9 on to which the tube is placed and a plurality of circularlyarranged knives 25 which are each movable radially towards the core, the core being carried at its left-hand end by means of two elastic rings 13 which are clamped to the ends of a hub 7 supported on a stand 5, the arrangement being such that the opposite end of the core can be swung radially in any direction. Each knife is releasably connected to a piston 20, which is movable in a guide on a cutting-head 17 supported on a stand 4, connected to a membrane 21 in a pressure-box 22, the pressure-boxes being connected to each other by means of conduits 28 which are connected to a common source of pressure fluid by means of a conduit 29 and 3-way valve 30. The core 9 is provided with a pivotally-mounted blade 33 operable by a lever 34 and with a scale 31 the zero of which is exactly in front of the knives 25. In operation, a tube to be cut is placed over the free end of the core 9 until the left-hand end of the tube reaches the left-hand side of the knives. The valve 30 is then opened to cause the knives to move radially towards the core to cut a ring 38 from the end of the tube. When the cutting operation is completed, the valve 30 is closed and an exhaust valve opened whereupon the pistons and knives are returned to their initial positions by resilient means. The tube is then moved along the core until the ring 38 reaches the lever 34, whereupon the latter is moved counterclockwise to cause the blade 33 to cut the ring 38 longitudinally so that it can readily be removed from the core. The tube is then moved until its left-hand end is at that point of the scale 31 corresponding to the desired length to be cut. The valve 30 is again re-opened and the tube cut. The cut part 40 is removed from the core. The blade 33 may be dispensed with or replaced by other cutting means.
