Abstract

Fluoroethylenes are polymerized in an aqueous medium containing a water-soluble catalyst and a dispersing agent consisting of, or comprising, in an amount not exceeding 1 per cent by weight of the medium, of 1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachlorobicyclo-(2,2,1) - 5 - heptene 2,3 - dicarboxylic acid (chlorendic acid), or a salt or imide thereof. Other dispersing agents may be present and also an insoluble saturated hydrocarbon, liquid at the polymerization temperature in a quantity of 1 to 5 per cent by weight of the aqueous medium. Fluoroethylenes mentioned are tetrafluoroethylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, vinylidene fluoride, vinyl fluoride, hexafluoropropylene, hexafluorobutadiene and mixtures. The fluoroethylenes may also be polymerized in the presence of other monomers such as ethylene. The catalyst may be mono- or di-succinic acid peroxide, diglutaric acid peroxide, ammonium persulphate and it may be admixed with a reducing agent such as sodium bisulphite and sodium ferricitrophosphate, or finely-divided iron in an amount of not more than 100 parts per million by weight of the aqueous medium. The other dispersing agent may be ammonium perfluorocaprylate. The aqueous polymer dispersions may be used for casting films, impregnating textiles, e.g. glass fabric, and coating metal or wood.
