Abstract
Terpolymers in which the monomers are arranged in alternating sequence are prepared by polymerizing vinylidene cyanide, a vinyl or vinylidene monomer (other than vinylidene cyanide) and a vinyl sulphonic or phosphonic acid or halide thereof under the action of a free radical polymerization initiator in an inert anhydrous organic solvent that prevents an ionic homopolymerization of the vinylidene cyanide. The vinyl or vinylidene monomer may be vinyl acetate. The terpolymer may comprise 40-60 mol. per cent of the cyanide, 60-40 mol. per cent of the vinyl or vinylidene monomer and less than 10 mol. per cent of the acid or halide which may be an acid fluoride or chloride. The solvent may be glacial acetic acid. The weight ratio of monomer mixture to solvent may be 1: 0.3-14 and the vinyl (or vinylidene) monomer may be used in excess. The polymerization initiator may be azoisobutyric acid dinitrile or 2: 4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide. The terpolymer may be formed into filaments, fibres and films and dyed.
