Abstract

783,307. Cable joints. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1956 [April 6, 1955], No. 10047/55. Class 38 (1). Escape of oil from the end of a multi-core oil-filled cable 1 during jointing is prevented by fitting a cap of resilient material over the cable end, .the cap consisting of a chamber 5 with sleeves 6 and 7 which fit tightly over the cable sheath and cores respectively, and a flexible tube 8 extending from the chamber to a valve 9 secured to and operable from the outside of a joint sleeve 2. During jointing of the cores, the sleeve 2 is withdrawn to the position shown in dotted lines and the valve is closed but when the sleeve is advanced to its operative position to enclose the completed joint, the valve is opened to restore the flow of oil.
