Abstract
Unsaturated polyesters derived from polyhydric alcohols having condensed ring systems with endomethylene groups, are copolymerized with 20 to 50 per cent of a vinyl compound, e.g. styrene, by the use of 3 to 6 per cent of cumene hydroperoxide preferably dissolved in a hydrocarbon. The polyhydric alcohols may be derived from Diels-Alder adducts of cyclopentadiene or from dicyclopentadiene, e.g. by treatment with carbon monoxide and hydrogen followed by hydrogenation. Polymerization accelerators such as cobalt naphthenate or octoate, zirconium octoate or tertiary amines, and dyestuffs, fillers and pigments may be included. In the example the polyester is derived from fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride and a diol obtained from dicyclopentadiene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, by esterification in the presence of trichlorethyl phosphorous acid ester and hydroquinone. The compositions are air drying and gelatinize very quickly when applied as lacquers on wood, metal or glass, but have improved pot-life. Specification 766,666 is referred to.
