Abstract
A joint sealing composition for road surfaces or floor coverings comprises (a) a polyester derived from an a ,b -unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and a dicyclic or tricyclic diol derived from dicyclopentadiene, or a Diels-Alder adduct thereof, by the oxo synthesis and hydrogenation and/or a polyester derived from an a ,b -unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and a diester of an endocyclic polyol having the hydroxyl groups attached to nuclear C atoms (such polyesters are described in Specifications 766,666 and 777,793), (b) at least one monomer copolymerizable with the same, e.g. styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or vinyl acetate, and (c) a polysulphide polymer. The ratio of polyester to monomer is preferably between 60:40 and 70:30, and that of polysulphide polymer to (a) and (b) together preferably between 10:90 and 40:60 p.b.w. An accelerator, e.g. cobalt naphthenate or octoate, may be added to the mixture, in amount of about 1-5% by weight of (a) and (b) together, to promote the action of the peroxide catalyst for the copolymerization, which may be e.g. benzoyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, or cumene hydro-peroxide, and may amount to 3-7% by weight of (a), (b) and (c) together, and is added shortly before the composition is to be used. A phenol and/or ketone and/or ketone-aldehyde resin may also be present, in an amount of 5-10% by weight of (a) + (c) together, e.g. a plasticized, resin-modified phenol resin, soluble in benzene hydrocarbons and vinyl monomers, a condensation product of cyclohexanone or methylcyclohexanone, or a polybenzoylethylene resin from acetophenone and formaldehyde. Inorganic fillers may be added in amounts of 30-100% of the mixture (a), (b) and (c), e.g. micaceous iron ore, ground shale, talc, quartz powder, carbon black, iron oxides. Non-air-drying unsaturated polyesters of a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and glycols may also be added, to form 30-70% of the total polyester. In examples compositions are described comprising a polyester as described in Specifications 766,666 and 777,793, a polyester derived from ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, fumaric acid and phthalic anhydride, styrene, a liquid polysulphide polymer, a polybenzoylethylene resin, micaceous iron ore, talc, cobalt naphthenate and cumene hydroperoxide.
