783,030. Centrifugal blowers. SUDDEUTSCHES JLO WERK GES. Sept. 30, 1955 [Oct. 16, 1954], No. 27934/55. Class 110(1). A blower for the air-cooling of a reversible internal combustion engine comprises an impeller 5 disposed eccentrically to a part-circular casing 1 so as to be in sealing relation to the casing, except for a small gap 7, on the side away from the discharge aperture 4, and the casing is sub-divided vertically to the plane of rotation of the impeller, preferably in the plane of symmetry of the casing, by a deflector 8 which extends into the aperture 4 and has a sealing action against the impeller periphery and the casing. This construction permits the blower to operate in either direction of rotation. For example, when rotation is in the direction of the arrow, air is discharged through the casing part 9 to the left-hand part of the aperture 4 in the usual manner, while air accumulates in the part 10 and returns in opposition to the direction of rotation towards the right-hand part of the aperture 4. The deflector 8 may be of cast or sheet metal or may be die-cast integrally with the casing 1. It is stated to be known to make the casing with two symmetrical halfspirals, a deflector member supplementing one or the other half-spiral, depending on the direction of rotation, to form a complete spiral.
