Abstract
A fibrous, water-insoluble, alkali metal titanate M2O : (TiO2)n, where M is an alkali metal of atomic number at least eleven and n is about 6 to about 7 can be made by reacting in the presence of water, a water-soluble, basic, oxygen-containing alkali metal compound with an oxygen-containing titanium compound in a molar ratio of M2O : TiO2 of 1 : 6 to 12 : 1, preferably 1 : 1 to 8 : 1, at a temperature of at least 400 DEG , preferably 400-800 DEG C., and pressure of at least 200 atmospheres, preferably 500 to 4000 atmospheres. If dipotassium dititanate, K2Ti2O3, is heated with water under the above conditions it reacts as both materials and forms products according to the invention. Specification 714,857 is referred to.
