Abstract

782,234. Coiling. BLASHILL, A. E. Oct. 20, 1955 [Nov. 3, 1954], No. 29974/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIV] A machine for manufacturing wire fabric of the chain-link type has a main drive shaft 12, a weaving spindle 14 which carries the flat former bar on which the wire is wound, an overrunning clutch 36 having a driven and a driving element, a low-speed transmission 24, 38 connecting the shaft 12 to the driving element of the clutch, a high-speed transmission 22, 34 connecting the shaft 12 to the driven element of the clutch, the high-speed transmission and the lowspeed transmission being connected to the spindle 14 through a roller-cam clutch 32. In operation, the weaving spindle 14 is rotated one turn at slow speed from the shaft 12 through gear 24 fast thereon, gear 38 rotatably mounted on spindle 14, overrun clutch 36, gear 34, in one with the inner member of the clutch 36, and the roller-cam clutch 32, the inner plate of which is keyed on the spindle 14. A onerevolution shaft 16, driven from the shaft 12 through gears 26, 144, 54 and clutch 52, rotates through bevel gears a cam-shaft 90 having a finger 92 thereon which rocks an arm 104 fast on a spindle 82. This causes yoke arms 88 on the shaft 82 to engage a clutch 20, 201 to transmit power from the shaft 12 through the high speed transmission 22, 34, overrunning the clutch 36, through the clutch 32 to the spindle 14. The clutch 52 of the onerevolution shaft 16 is disengaged by an arm 120 engaging a finger 56 on the clutch, during the high-speed rotation of the spindle 14. The spindle 14 rotates at high speed until a lug 78 on a chain 70, driven from a worm 40 on the spindle 14, rocks an arm 80 on the shaft 82 to disengage the clutch 20 whereupon the spindle recommences slow speed rotation for one turn. The spindle 14 is halted at the end of this low speed rotation by the rocking of an arm 122 of a three-armed lever 116, 120, 122 into the path of a dog 42<SP>1</SP> on the clutch 32 to disengage the clutch. The rocking is effected by the engagement of a lug 76 on the chain 70, with a collar 114 on a rod 112 connected to the threearmed lever. The said rocking of the threearmed lever allows the clutch 52 to re-engage. Consequent rotation of the shaft 16 causes a projection 48 thereon to move a bar 124 to move the rod 112 and collar 114 from the lug 76 and allow spring means to disengage the arm 122 from the dog 421 of the clutch 32. A new cycle of operation is thus commenced with a low-speed rotation of the spindle 14. Specification 510,948 is referred to.
