Abstract
782,034. Locking rods and levers. REID, S. G., and GOODSON, C. C., [trading as REID ENGINEERING CO.]. Jan. 11, 1955, No. 842/55. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A locking control device includes a pair of locking members slidably positioned on a bar in gripping relationship therewith and wherein each of the locking members contacts the bar on opposite surfaces thereof, a contacting portion of one locking member being directly opposite a contacting portion of the other locking member. As shown in Fig. 4, which is a control device for an aeroplane throttle, the locking members 30 are slidable along a quadrantshaped bar 28. Each member 30 has a shoe 32 which contacts the top surface of the quadrant and a shoe 34 which contacts the lower surface of the quadrant. The members 30 are connected by means of a pivot pin 42 to a lever 44 which is connected to the throttle and are urged apart by a spring 40. The lever 44 is mounted on a pivot pin 48 which is positioned at the centre of radius of the quadrant bar 28 and on the same pivot pin 48 a lever 22 is mounted. This lever 22 engages the members 30 by means of adjusting screws 56 and when the lever 22 is moved by hand the engagement of the screw 56 pointing in the direction of movement, with the adjacent member 30 causes both members to slide along the quadrant bar and to carry the lever 44 with them to adjust the throttle. If the lever 44 tries to move independently of the lever 22 it causes the members 30 to tilt and wedge against the quadrant bar 28 thus preventing movement of the lever 22. The amount of relative motion between the levers 22 and 44 can be limited by a pin 50 which passes through the lever 22, the lever 44 and the members 30. The apertures through which it passes in the members 30 are oversize to permit a certain amount of lost motion and the pin is mounted in a rubber bushing in the lever 44 to permit the amount of motion between the levers 22 and 44. As an alternative the amount of motion between the two levers can be limited by adjusting screws (not shown) similar to the screws 56. A construction suitable for the control of a sliding seat is shown in Fig. 12. Two members 72 are used each of which is slidable on a bar 64 and each of which has two shoes 92. The members are connected by a pivot pin 74 and are urged into contact with the bar 64 by a spring 76. They are released by a lever 86 which carries a non-circular pin 80 engaging in slots 78 in the members 72. The slots 78 are elongated and are of slightly greater width than the pin 80 and are normally urged to a non-aligned position by the spring 76. Movement of the lever 86 rotates the pin and this moves the slots 78 into alignment and so releases the shoes 92 from the bar 64. As shown, the shoes are an integral part of each member 72 but in a modification the shoes can be independently pivoted members.
