Abstract

Polyvinylpyrrolidone is made by polymerizing the monomer in solution in the presence of a catalyst by maintaining a portion of the vinylpyrrolidone amounting to 5-50 per cent by weight of the total amount to be polymerized admixed with a portion of the solvent and catalyst at a temperature of 30 DEG to 90 DEG C. until polymerization commences and then adding the remainder of the pyrrolidone, solvent, and catalyst either continuously or portionwise, over an extended period of time. The solvent may be water, an alcohol, or a ketone. The catalyst may be boron trifluoride, a persalt, hydrogen peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile, or a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia.
