Class 109 [Also in Group XXXVI] A cable 10 has a reinforcing envelope comprising helically preformed elements 12 of uniform internal diameter and pitch and at least one substantially shorter helically prefromed element laid up therewith intermediate their ends so that the intermediate portion 18 of the envelope has a greater internal diameter than the end portions. The internal diameter of the envelope is preferably initially less than the external diameter of the cable so that when the elements are applied to the cable the latter is gripped by the end portions of the envelope.
