Abstract
781,516. Boring earth and rock. CABOT. Inc., G. L. April 19, 1955, No. 11199/55. Addition to 749,148. Class 85 A percussive drilling tool has a drill bit carried by a reciprocable mass which is connected to a backing mass by a rigid connecting means having a high modulus of elasticity, the connecting means being rapidly stretched by electromagnetic means and then contracting due to its elasticity so causing the drill bit to oscillate at a high frequency. A backing mass comprising a cable socket 16, Fig. 1, a mass 10 and a tubular member 18 is connected by a rod 14 to a reciprocable mass 12 which is slidable in the tube 18 and carries a bit 20. The electromagnetic means comprise an armature 24 connected to the rod 14 and an electromagnet having a ring like core composed of L-shaped laminations 26, with windings 28, connected to the tube 18 and energized by an alternating current so as to oscillate the system at its resonant frequency. The backing mass 10, 16, 18 may be ten times the reciprocable mass 12 so that the backing mass will remain comparatively stationary. In a modification, Fig. 3, the backing mass 42 and' the reciprocable mass 44 are of equal mass and are connected by a rod 46 which is attached at its nodular point by a bracket 48 to a tubular member 40 in which bothmasses can slide. The system is vibrated as before, and the two masses 42, 44 oscillate with equal amplitudes.
