Abstract

721,115. Electric well-logging apparatus. SCHLUMBERGER WELL SURVEYING CORPORATION. July 29,1953 [Aug. 5,1952], No. 21032/53. Class 37. Well-logging apparatus in which the earth formations surrounding the bore-hole are investigated by noting the signals in pick-up coils located in the bore-hole is characterized in that the apparatus in the bore-hole is supplied with a plurality of substantially vertical fins of insulating material, whereby eddy-currents in the conductive drilling liquid are reduced. As shown (Fig. 1), inside a bore-hole 11 containing inductive drilling liquid 12 is located a support 18 containing a series of coils 13-17 in slots on the support, coils 13, 15, 16 being fed in combination from an oscillator inside the support 18, and coils 14, 17 being connected in series opposition to indicating apparatus 31. Three longitudinal, insulating, flexible fins 23, 24, 25 are attached to the support 18, either tangentially or radially, thereby restricting the eddy currents in the conducting fluid 12. Each fin 23, 24, 25 may be discontinuous, comprising a section opposite at least each of the principal coils, with or without gaps between the sections, to facilitate passing the apparatus through irregular holes. The fins also help to maintain the apparatus central in the bore-hole.
