Abstract

1,235,656. Magnetic separators. W. MAYALL. 1 Jan., 1970 [22 Jan., 1969], No. 3566/69. Heading B2J. [Also in Divisions E1 and E2] An assembly for collecting magnetic junk includes magnetic members 31, 32, 33 between coaxial non-magnetic tubes 1, 4 and recesses 41, 42, 43 formed in the tube 4 for accommodating the junk. The assembly is located in a drill string above the drill head of an earth drilling apparatus, the tube 1 carrying the drilling mud. The magnetic members are poled in the same direction and may be made up of magnetic elements 34-37 magnetically in series. The magnetic members may be arranged in axially spaced sets (Fig. 3, not shown) and the tube 4 may have freedom of rotation about the tube 1. Alternatively, there may be four magnetic members 81-84 (Fig. 6, not shown), members (81) and (83) being poled oppositely to members (82) and (84).
